Police Begin Special Investigation Into Greater Malé Electricity Blackout

By Ahmed Ashraf Published June 1, 2025

On Sunday, June 1, 2025, a significant power outage plunged the Greater Malé area—including Malé City, Hulhumalé, and Hulhulé—into darkness, disrupting daily life and raising concerns about the resilience of the nation’s power infrastructure. In response, the Maldives Police Service (MPS) has launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the root cause of the disruption.

The MPS announced the initiation of a special probe to ascertain how the outage occurred, aiming to determine whether the incident resulted from technical failures, deliberate sabotage, or systemic vulnerabilities within the nation’s power infrastructure.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu addressed the nation via social media, expressing concern over the outage and urging authorities to expedite the investigation. “The recent power disruption in the Greater Malé area is deeply concerning. I have directed relevant agencies to work diligently to identify the cause and prevent future occurrences,” President Muizzu stated.

Authorities assure the public that all necessary measures are being taken to prevent future disruptions and to safeguard the nation’s critical infrastructure.
