Ameenee Magu to reopen Sunday as first two repair segments near completion

By Hussain Shinan Published 6 hours ago

A repaired section of Ameenee Magu will reopen to traffic on Sunday as the government completes the first phase of rehabilitation works on the heavily used road in western Malé.

The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development said resurfacing has been completed across the first two sections of the ongoing repair project, with crews now carrying out road markings and other finishing works ahead of the reopening.

The first section covers the stretch from the area near the Voice of Maldives building towards Dharumavantha Hospital. The work involved removing damaged asphalt, repairing the road structure and laying a new surface.

Asphalt paving has also been completed on the second section, which includes the four-way junction near the Voice of Maldives building. Utility networks beneath the road were rearranged where necessary before the section was resurfaced.

The ministry said all remaining finishing work on the two sections will be completed before the road is opened to motorists on Sunday.

Once the current sections reopen, rehabilitation will move to Segment 3, extending from Izzudheen Magu towards Korukendi Hingun.

The government awarded the repair works to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) on June 15 as part of efforts to address deterioration along Ameenee Magu.

The latest repairs were commissioned after sections of the road, particularly in Maafannu, developed extensive asphalt damage and potholes that made driving increasingly difficult.

Ameenee Magu is one of the main east-west roads running through the capital and is used by public buses as well as a significant number of heavy vehicles, placing considerable pressure on the road surface.

The road had undergone a major redevelopment under the previous administration. That project covered approximately 1.79 kilometres and cost around MVR 84 million, with the overall redevelopment completed in January 2024.

However, sections of the newly developed road subsequently began showing signs of deterioration, requiring additional repairs.

The current administration has opted to rehabilitate the damaged areas in stages, allowing sections to be repaired and reopened progressively rather than closing a large portion of the road simultaneously.

The Ameenee Magu works are being carried out alongside a broader programme to improve major roads and traffic corridors across Malé.

Major redevelopment is also underway on Boduthakurufaanu Magu, the ring road surrounding much of the capital. The project includes resurfacing, drainage improvements and other infrastructure upgrades intended to improve traffic flow and the durability of the road.

Development work has already been completed on the stretch of Boduthakurufaanu Magu between the Henveiru Ferry Terminal and North Harbour, with the government reporting improved traffic movement along the completed sections.

Work is also moving towards the western side of the capital. Parts of the West Park area have been closed as crews carry out drainage and preparatory works associated with the next stages of the road redevelopment.

The road works have resulted in temporary changes to some bus routes and stops in the area while construction continues.

With the first two repaired sections of Ameenee Magu scheduled to reopen on Sunday, MTCC will continue the rehabilitation progressively along the remaining sections.
