The Bank of Maldives (BML) has selected global financial technology company Finastra to modernize its core banking platform, marking a major step in the bank’s long-term digital transformation strategy.
Under the agreement, BML will implement Finastra Essence, a next-generation core banking solution designed to improve operational efficiency, speed up product development, and strengthen both conventional and Islamic banking services.
The bank said the new platform will provide a modern, open, and flexible foundation that enables faster launches of new products and services, greater automation, streamlined operations through straight-through processing, and enhanced capabilities for relationship managers to better serve customers. The system will also support the continued delivery and expansion of BML’s conventional and Shariah-compliant banking products.
BML CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef described the partnership as a significant milestone in the bank’s transformation journey.
“Our strategy is anchored in continuous innovation and delivering lasting value to the customers and communities we serve,” Shareef said. “Our partnership with Finastra Essence represents a pivotal step in our digital transformation journey, providing the agile, future-ready foundation we need to accelerate innovation, drive operational excellence, and expand our ability to deliver world-class financial services to customers nationwide.”
Finastra Executive Vice President of Universal Banking, Siobhan Byron, said the company is pleased to support the Maldives’ largest bank as it modernizes its operations.
She said BML’s decision to adopt Finastra Essence highlights the platform’s ability to help financial institutions innovate more quickly while maintaining resilience, flexibility, and operational excellence.
According to Finastra, BML selected Essence after evaluating its advanced functionality, open architecture, technological flexibility, delivery capabilities, strong market reputation, and proactive engagement throughout the selection process.
Founded in 1982, BML is the Maldives’ largest bank by assets and branch network. The bank serves more than 390,000 customers through branches, self-service banking centres, ATMs, and digital banking channels. It has increasingly focused on digital-first banking, customer experience, and sustainable growth as part of its long-term strategy.
Finastra is one of the world’s leading financial services software providers, serving thousands of financial institutions across more than 100 countries. Backed by Vista Equity Partners, the company develops technology that supports banking, lending, and payment services while helping financial institutions modernize operations and accelerate innovation.
