The redevelopment of Boduthakurufaanu Magu has reached another major milestone, with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) announcing that asphalt paving will begin this week after completing all major underground utility works on the current phase of the project.
The road expansion forms part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s broader vision to modernize Malé City’s transport infrastructure, improve traffic flow, and create safer roads and pedestrian spaces across the capital.

According to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company, all sewer lines, water pipe connections, stormwater catchpits, and cable junction installations under Phase 1 of the Malé North Side Boduthakurufaanu Magu Road Project have now been completed, marking 100 percent completion of the project’s critical underground utility infrastructure.
The first phase covers the stretch between Izzudheen Jetty and the Henveiru Ferry Terminal, where construction began in March this year.

Senior Project Manager Sharwas Abdullah Faiz said structural works on Segments 3, 4 and 5, extending from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the President’s Office, are nearing completion and are ready for asphalt paving.
He noted that the remaining pavement preparation works are expected to be completed within the next two days, while sheet piling works for Segment 2 will begin next week.
MTCC also confirmed that subgrading works continue to progress steadily. Following the completion of work on Segments 5 and 4, construction crews have now moved on to Segments 3 and 2, keeping the project on schedule.
Machinery required for asphalt paving will be mobilized on July 1. To facilitate the operation of heavy equipment, the road section between the Henveiru Ferry Terminal and the entrance to the Carnival parking zone will be temporarily closed during paving works. The Carnival parking area itself will remain accessible to the public.
The asphalt paving will be carried out in two stages. The first stage will cover the section from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with work expected to begin immediately after the paving equipment is deployed.
MTCC aims to complete all ongoing works on the current sections of Boduthakurufaanu Magu before July 26.
The Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment is among the flagship infrastructure projects of the current administration. Once completed, the expanded roadway is expected to significantly ease congestion along one of Malé City’s busiest corridors, improve traffic circulation, and enhance safety and accessibility for both motorists and pedestrians.
