The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has begun planting additional coconut palms along the newly redeveloped sections of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, as landscaping work continues on one of the capital’s largest road infrastructure projects.
In an update shared on social media, MTCC said the latest phase of greening efforts is focused on the stretch between the Henveiru Ferry Terminal and Malé North Harbour, where newly reclaimed areas are being transformed with additional vegetation.
The company said the coconut palms form part of a broader plan to create a greener and more attractive urban environment alongside the upgraded roadway.
According to MTCC, more than 3,100 trees have already been planted along the Boduthakurufaanu Magu corridor, reflecting the scale of the landscaping component included in the redevelopment project.
The greening initiative follows a commitment by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who previously announced that a dedicated landscaping plan would accompany the road widening project to improve both the environmental quality and visual appeal of the capital’s waterfront.
Earlier this year, government officials also took part in a tree-planting event at the newly developed parking area created under the Boduthakurufaanu Magu redevelopment project.
The ongoing road upgrade extends beyond resurfacing works, with reclaimed land being used to widen the carriageway, expand parking capacity and introduce landscaped public spaces. Several sections of the road have already been reopened to traffic as construction progresses toward completion.
The tree-planting campaign also supports the government’s wider environmental agenda, including the 5 Million Trees Programme, which aims to increase tree cover across the Maldives while promoting biodiversity, climate resilience and more sustainable urban development.
Once completed, the redevelopment of Boduthakurufaanu Magu is expected to improve traffic flow, increase parking availability and create a greener waterfront corridor for residents and visitors alike.
