The Dhiraagu Malé Open 2026 has concluded with more than 420 swimmers taking part, making this year’s competition the largest open water swimming event held in Malé.
Organised by Swim Maldives, the two-day event took place at Rasfannu from August 21 to 22, attracting swimmers from across the country and highlighting the growing popularity of open water swimming in the Maldives.
Participants competed across 1-kilometre, 500-metre and 250-metre categories, with the youngest swimmer aged six and the oldest aged 79. Organisers said the broad age range demonstrated the event’s inclusive approach and the increasing interest in the sport among both younger and older participants.
A new feature introduced this year was the 500-metre Team Relay, allowing friends, families and swimming clubs to compete together. The addition expanded the event beyond individual races and provided participants with a new team-based competition.
Inclusivity also remained a major focus of the Dhiraagu Malé Open. Swimmers from Special Olympics Maldives and para swimmers competed across several distances alongside other participants in the same race categories.
Swim Maldives said its events are designed to provide opportunities for swimmers of different ages, abilities and levels of experience to compete together. The organisation also uses the competition as a platform to encourage participation in open water swimming and raise awareness about protecting the Maldives’ marine environment.
The record turnout at this year’s competition reflects the continued expansion of open water swimming in the country, with both young and experienced swimmers participating in increasing numbers.
Dhiraagu, which supported the event, said it remains committed to initiatives that encourage healthy lifestyles, strengthen community engagement and provide opportunities for people across the Maldives to participate in sports and recreational activities.
