Dhiraagu partners with SEAD to strengthen ocean literacy among Maldivian youth

By Hussain Shinan Published 4 hours ago

Dhiraagu has partnered with environmental organisation SEAD to expand ocean education opportunities for young Maldivians, combining classroom learning with practical experiences designed to build a stronger understanding of the country’s marine environment.

Under the partnership, Dhiraagu will provide connectivity support for SEAD’s Urban Hub in Hulhumalé as well as outreach activities conducted across the islands. The two organisations will also collaborate on environmental awareness efforts highlighting the importance of ocean literacy and marine conservation.

The initiative is intended to help young people better understand marine ecosystems and develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to contribute to their protection.

SEAD is a non-governmental organisation whose work is structured around four principles: Science, Explore, Act and Discover. Its approach combines environmental education with practical activities ranging from citizen science and marine data collection to field expeditions and ecosystem restoration.

Rather than limiting learning to conventional sessions, the programme gives participants direct exposure to the environments they are studying.

Young people taking part in SEAD activities in Hulhumalé, K. Kaashidhoo and B. Goidhoo explore subjects including marine ecosystems, seagrass habitats, wetlands, freshwater ecosystems, sustainable practices and ecosystem restoration.

Local experts and marine biologists are involved in delivering the programme, while participants also take part in water-based activities including snorkelling, surfing and kitesurfing.

These activities are intended to help young people develop a personal connection with the ocean while understanding how human activity and environmental changes can affect marine ecosystems.

Ocean literacy carries particular significance for the Maldives, where the sea is closely connected to everyday life and major areas of the economy.

The country’s coral reefs and marine ecosystems support fisheries and tourism, while also providing natural protection to low-lying islands. Environmental pressures including marine pollution, coastal development and the effects of climate change have increased the importance of conservation and public understanding of these ecosystems.

Building that awareness among younger generations can play a role in encouraging more sustainable behaviour and increasing community participation in environmental protection.

The partnership will also use connectivity to support SEAD’s educational and outreach work, reflecting the growing role of digital tools in environmental learning, communication and the collection and sharing of information.

For Dhiraagu, the collaboration forms part of its wider focus on environmental sustainability, youth development and community engagement.

The telecommunications provider has supported a range of community, environmental and youth initiatives alongside its core connectivity services, with marine conservation and environmental awareness forming part of its sustainability activities.

Through the latest partnership, Dhiraagu and SEAD aim to create more opportunities for young Maldivians to experience marine environments firsthand while developing an understanding of the responsibility individuals and communities share in protecting them.

Dhiraagu said it remains committed to supporting initiatives that safeguard the natural environment, empower young people and contribute to stronger communities across the Maldives.
