First Lady Sajidha Mohamed attended a special debate held to mark International Nurses Day, where participants examined whether the nursing profession in the Maldives offers adequate opportunities for career advancement.
The event took place at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Maldives National University (MNU) and was jointly organised by Community Nurse Volunteers and the Maldives Oncology Nurse Association.
Focus on Professional Growth
The debate centred on the motion that the nursing field in the Maldives provides sufficient pathways for advancement. Participants presented differing perspectives, sparking discussion on the current state of professional development within the sector.
The session highlighted existing opportunities available to nurses while also drawing attention to areas where further expansion and support may be needed.
Engagement with Healthcare Community
Upon arrival, the First Lady was welcomed by Community Nurse Volunteers President Mariyam Niyan and Maldives Oncology Nurse Association President Aminath Zeeniya.
The event drew a large audience of registered nurses, healthcare practitioners and academics, creating a platform for meaningful dialogue on strengthening the profession.
Marking International Nurses Day
Observed annually on 12 May, International Nurses Day recognises the critical role nurses play in healthcare systems worldwide.
Organisers said the debate aimed to encourage reflection on the future of nursing in the Maldives, while promoting discussions on how to expand career opportunities and further develop the sector.
The gathering underscored the importance of continued investment in nursing education, professional growth and recognition as the country works to strengthen its healthcare system.
