The Maldivian government’s nationwide anti-tobacco campaign, “Den Huttaalama” (Let’s Stop Now), officially began on Monday with the unveiling of its campaign logo during World No Tobacco Day commemorations held in M. Mulah.
First Lady Sajidha Mohamed launched the campaign logo as guest of honour at the official ceremony, describing it as an important milestone in the country’s ongoing efforts to reduce tobacco use and build a healthier future.
Addressing the gathering, the First Lady said she was confident the campaign would generate meaningful results and help reinforce the objectives of this year’s World No Tobacco Day theme.
“This logo represents an important step forward in our national campaign against tobacco. God willing, this initiative will produce positive results and strengthen our efforts to protect society from the harms of tobacco,” she said.
She also renewed her appeal for tobacco users to quit the habit, urging members of the public not to become trapped by nicotine addiction.
Highlighting recent policy reforms, Sajidha noted that the government has introduced a number of legislative measures aimed at reducing tobacco consumption, including a nationwide ban on electronic cigarettes and vaping devices as well as the implementation of the country’s generational tobacco ban.
The launch of the campaign follows President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s earlier announcement that the government would establish a nationwide movement to combat tobacco use.
During an episode of the state media programme Nation Chat broadcast on June 26, President Muizzu said the administration’s long-term vision is to create a healthier, tobacco-free Maldives. He also announced that community organizations would be encouraged to participate in the campaign through financial assistance, grants and incentive-based programmes, including cash prizes for outstanding initiatives.
Officials have said the campaign is intended to mobilize communities, schools, civil society organizations and businesses in promoting tobacco-free lifestyles and increasing awareness of the health risks associated with smoking and nicotine products.
The First Lady travelled to Mulah not only to participate in the World No Tobacco Day programme but also to inaugurate the island’s newly completed Fitness and Recreation Centre, another project aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles within local communities.
She was welcomed by island residents upon her arrival and thanked the people of Mulah for the warm reception extended to her delegation.
Several state ministers and the Member of Parliament representing the Mulah constituency accompanied the First Lady during the visit.
The launch of “Den Huttaalama” comes as the Maldives continues to strengthen tobacco control policies through stricter legislation, public awareness campaigns and community-based initiatives. Authorities have identified reducing tobacco consumption—particularly among young people—as a key public health priority, with the government pledging to continue expanding programmes that encourage healthier lifestyles across the country.
