Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam has extended greetings to the government and people of Viet Nam as the Southeast Asian nation marks its National Day.
In a message sent to Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung on Tuesday, Adam conveyed congratulations on behalf of the Government and people of the Maldives and expressed hopes for Viet Nam’s continued peace, progress and prosperity.
The Foreign Minister highlighted the longstanding friendship between the Maldives and Viet Nam, expressing confidence that relations between the two countries would continue to strengthen in the years ahead.
She also reaffirmed the Maldives’ interest in expanding cooperation with Viet Nam both bilaterally and through international and multilateral platforms.
Adam further conveyed her wishes for the health and success of her Vietnamese counterpart as the country commemorated the national occasion.
Viet Nam celebrates its National Day on September 2, marking the declaration of independence in 1945. The occasion commemorates the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam, proclaimed by Ho Chi Minh in Hanoi following the end of Japanese occupation during the Second World War.
The country later underwent decades of conflict before reunification in 1975, with the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam formally established the following year.
Viet Nam has since emerged as one of Southeast Asia’s rapidly developing economies and is a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, commonly known as ASEAN.
The Maldives and Viet Nam maintain diplomatic relations and engage through bilateral channels as well as international organisations. Both countries are also part of the wider Asia-Pacific region and have sought to strengthen cooperation with partners across Asia in areas of mutual interest.
Adam’s message on the 2026 National Day reaffirmed the Maldives’ intention to continue developing those ties, with the Foreign Minister expressing confidence that closer cooperation would benefit the people of both countries.
