Foreigners warned: Revealing clothing could lead to police action

By Hussain Shinan Published 4 hours ago

The Maldives Police Service has warned foreign nationals living in the country that legal action may be taken against those who wear revealing clothing in public places in a manner authorities consider contrary to the Maldives’ general social norms.

The warning comes after police said they had observed some foreign nationals appearing on streets and in other public spaces in clothing that does not conform with generally accepted standards within Maldivian communities.

In a statement issued on Thursday, police said such conduct could conflict with established community standards and customs, and that measures would be taken to prevent behaviour that could negatively affect public harmony.

Authorities said action against individuals found violating these standards could be taken under the Prevention of Acts Contrary to General Social Norms Act, Act No. 11/2010.

Police also called on employers and sponsors of foreign workers to ensure their employees are made aware of local customs and appropriate conduct in public spaces.

The warning applies particularly to public areas and streets outside locations specifically designated for tourists and visitors. Foreign nationals have been advised to respect Maldivian culture and customs while living in or visiting local communities.

The Maldives maintains a distinction between tourist areas and inhabited local communities when it comes to certain social practices. While resorts and other designated tourist areas cater to international visitors, people visiting or residing on inhabited islands are generally expected to observe local customs, including standards relating to dress and public behaviour.

Police said the latest notice is intended to prevent conduct considered contrary to general social norms and to maintain peace and harmony within communities.

Authorities reiterated that individuals found acting in violation of the relevant law may face legal action and again urged employers and sponsors to raise awareness among foreign workers about the country’s social and cultural expectations.
