Former SriLankan Airlines Chief Executive Officer Kapila Chandrasena has been found dead at his residence in Colombo, with authorities describing the case as suspicious.
According to Sri Lanka Police, Chandrasena’s body was discovered at his home in Kollupitiya. Police Media Spokesman ASP F.U. Wootler said the former airline executive was found hanging inside the residence.
The incident comes just a day after the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court issued a warrant for Chandrasena’s arrest over alleged violations of bail conditions. The order was made by Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama following concerns that the sureties submitted by Chandrasena were unsuitable.
Earlier, the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption had requested the court to revoke his bail and remand him until the conclusion of ongoing legal proceedings. The commission alleged that Chandrasena had breached the trust of the court by failing to comply with bail requirements.
Chandrasena had been a key figure in an investigation into a controversial 2013 aircraft procurement deal involving the purchase of 10 aircraft for the national carrier, valued at more than $2 billion.
Police have confirmed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death are ongoing.
