Construction of 75 housing units in Dhiggaru, Meemu Atoll, is progressing, with Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) currently carrying out foundation concrete works for the second housing unit.
The MVR 117 million development, funded by the government through the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP), is being implemented as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to improve housing opportunities for residents of the island.
MTCC, which was awarded the design-and-build contract, confirmed that foundation concrete works are underway at the project site. The contract provides a construction period of 420 days.
The project will deliver 75 residential units, each covering approximately 1,000 square feet and designed to accommodate families requiring spacious, permanent housing.
Each unit will feature three bedrooms and three bathrooms, along with a living room, kitchen, dining area, storage room and dedicated laundry space.
In addition to the residential buildings, the development includes several supporting facilities intended to improve the living environment for future occupants.

These include perimeter walls, outdoor lighting around the residential area, a public park and designated vehicle parking spaces.
The inclusion of recreational and communal facilities is intended to provide residents with a more convenient and family-friendly neighbourhood, rather than limiting the project to residential buildings alone.
The housing development is among the commitments made by President Muizzu to address accommodation needs in Dhiggaru, where access to suitable housing remains an important concern for local families.
Housing shortages have long affected communities across the Maldives, with limited land availability, rising construction costs and increasing household sizes contributing to difficulties in securing independent accommodation.
While major housing developments have traditionally been concentrated in the Greater Malé region, the government has also pledged to expand residential infrastructure across the atolls to address demand within existing island communities.
Projects such as the Dhiggaru development are intended to provide additional housing options locally, allowing families to remain in their home islands while gaining access to improved living conditions.
The development is being financed through the PSIP, the government’s principal mechanism for funding public infrastructure projects, including housing, harbour development, healthcare facilities and other essential services.
MTCC has undertaken a wide range of government-funded infrastructure projects throughout the Maldives, including harbour construction, coastal protection, land reclamation and residential development.
The company’s latest update confirms that foundation works are progressing, although it has not specified the overall percentage of construction completed or announced an expected handover date for the housing units.
Once completed, the project will add 75 residential units to Dhiggaru’s housing stock, alongside supporting infrastructure designed to serve the new residential community.
