A search operation has been launched after an inmate serving a sentence at Hulhumalé Prison escaped while receiving emergency medical treatment at Hulhumalé Hospital.
According to the Maldives Correctional Service, the escaped inmate has been identified as Hussain Shahban of Shabnam House, L. Maabaidhoo.
Corrections stated that Shahban managed to flee while undergoing treatment at the hospital after being transferred there for emergency medical care.
Authorities said efforts to locate him are currently underway in coordination with the Maldives Police Service.
The Correctional Service has also appealed to the public for assistance, requesting anyone with information regarding Shahban’s whereabouts to immediately contact police through the emergency hotline 3322111.
No additional details regarding the circumstances of the escape or the inmate’s medical condition were disclosed by authorities.
The incident has triggered a joint search operation involving both police and correctional authorities as efforts continue to trace the escaped inmate.
