Long-Awaited Ameenee Magu Repairs Move Closer as MTCC Begins Surveys

By Hussain Shinan Published 1 hour ago

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has begun preliminary survey work ahead of planned repairs to Ameenee Magu, one of Malé’s busiest roads, following growing public concern over deteriorating road conditions.

According to MTCC, survey teams carried out asphalt-cutting work on the road on Tuesday as part of investigations needed before construction can begin.

The company said the project covers repairs to Ameenee Magu, Izzudheen Magu, and sections of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, with the aim of improving road safety and making travel through the capital smoother.

The government awarded the road repair contract to MTCC on June 15 after motorists and residents raised repeated complaints over the increasing number of potholes, particularly along the Maafannu section near the Food Court area.

Although the contract was awarded last month, repair work did not begin immediately as MTCC was prioritising the ongoing redevelopment of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, one of the capital’s largest road infrastructure projects.

Ameenee Magu was extensively redeveloped under the previous administration and reopened to traffic in early 2024 after a phased road improvement project valued at MVR 84.4 million.

However, within a relatively short period after its completion, several sections of the road began to deteriorate, with large potholes emerging in multiple areas. The damage has drawn criticism from road users, who say the uneven surface has created safety concerns and made daily commuting increasingly difficult.

The upcoming repairs are expected to restore damaged sections of the road while complementing the broader effort to upgrade Malé’s road network. The government is currently undertaking several infrastructure projects across the capital, including the modernisation of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, as part of efforts to improve traffic flow and transport infrastructure.

MTCC has not yet announced when full-scale repair work on Ameenee Magu will begin, but said the ongoing surveys are a necessary step before construction activities can commence.
