Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has commenced a new training programme aimed at strengthening the operational capabilities of its Airport Fire and Rescue Services (AFRS) personnel at Velana International Airport (VIA).
The Airport Fire and Rescue Services Vehicle Operator Course began today with the participation of 26 trainees. According to MACL, the six-week programme is designed to enhance both technical skills and professional development among personnel responsible for operating specialized emergency response vehicles at the country’s main international gateway.
The training focuses on improving the competency of vehicle operators who play a critical role in airport emergency preparedness and response operations. Participants will receive instruction on the safe and efficient operation of fire and rescue equipment, operational procedures, and best practices used in aviation emergency situations.
MACL said the programme forms part of its broader efforts to strengthen safety standards and ensure that emergency response teams remain prepared to meet the demands of a growing aviation sector.

Airport Fire and Rescue Services are considered one of the most vital components of airport operations worldwide. These teams are responsible for responding to aircraft incidents, fires, fuel emergencies and other critical situations that may occur within airport premises. International aviation standards require airports to maintain trained personnel and specialized equipment capable of responding to emergencies within strict timeframes.
As passenger traffic and aircraft movements continue to increase at Velana International Airport, MACL has been investing in staff development, operational readiness and infrastructure improvements to support the airport’s expanding role as the country’s primary aviation hub.

The company has repeatedly emphasized the importance of training and capacity-building programmes as part of its long-term strategy to enhance safety, operational efficiency and service quality across airport operations.
With 26 participants enrolled in the latest course, MACL expects the programme to further strengthen the skills and readiness of its emergency response workforce, helping ensure that VIA continues to meet international aviation safety requirements while supporting the continued growth of the Maldives’ tourism and aviation industries.
