Maldives Post Limited’s Community Online Shop (COS), an initiative designed to connect small local producers and home-based businesses with customers across the country, has received international recognition at the APPU Innovation Awards 2026.
Maldives Post announced that the initiative received the Special Recognition Award, with the awards panel highlighting the project’s use of the postal network to create wider market opportunities for local producers, artisans and home-based entrepreneurs.
The recognition marks an international achievement for a platform that was created to address a challenge faced by many small businesses operating outside the capital: reaching customers beyond their own islands.
The Community Online Shop operates through Maldives Post’s eTukuri platform, combining an online marketplace with the company’s nationwide postal and delivery network. This allows participating businesses to market products digitally while using the postal system to deliver orders to customers elsewhere in the Maldives.
The initiative was first launched in December 2021, with the aim of giving island-based producers and small businesses access to a national market. It was introduced at a ceremony in Kulhudhuffushi City and initially focused on helping entrepreneurs overcome geographical barriers by taking locally produced goods online.
From the outset, Maldives Post positioned the project as a way of supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, cooperatives and individual entrepreneurs, particularly those based in the atolls. The initiative also emerged in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, when disruptions to conventional business highlighted the need for alternative ways for small producers to reach customers.
The service was later incorporated into the eTukuri mobile application, allowing businesses to list products and customers to purchase from island-specific online shops. Maldives Post has said the platform was designed to help smaller businesses expand beyond their immediate communities while taking advantage of the postal network for distribution.
The Community Online Shop remains active today, with eTukuri currently featuring community shops representing locations including Kulhudhuffushi City, Fuvahmulah City, B. Eydhafushi, Lh. Naifaru, L. Fonadhoo and Th. Guraidhoo. Products available through the wider platform range from locally produced food items to handicrafts and other goods.
The Special Recognition Award at the APPU Innovation Awards places the initiative among postal projects recognised for finding new uses for traditional postal infrastructure at a time when postal operators worldwide are increasingly expanding into e-commerce, logistics and digital services.
For Maldives Post, the recognition also highlights how its nationwide network can be used for more than conventional mail services, particularly in connecting businesses scattered across the geographically dispersed islands of the Maldives with a larger customer base.
