President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans for the national airline, Maldivian, to introduce direct flights between Malé and Karachi, Pakistan, as both countries move to strengthen trade, tourism and transport connectivity.
The President made the announcement while addressing the Maldives Business Forum in Islamabad during his State Visit to Pakistan.
President Muizzu said he expects Maldivian to commence direct operations between the two cities in the near future, making travel more convenient for passengers while creating new opportunities for businesses and the tourism industry.

He called on airlines, aviation authorities and private sector stakeholders to work together to improve air connectivity and increase flight frequencies between the Maldives and Pakistan.
The President also highlighted the importance of maritime transport for island nations, encouraging shipping companies, port operators and logistics businesses to establish commercially viable direct connections between the two countries.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed that he had instructed relevant authorities to accelerate efforts to establish transport links with the Maldives.
Sharif expressed hope that the necessary arrangements would be finalized soon, adding that Pakistan’s national airline and other carriers could participate in the proposed services.
The Prime Minister also emphasized Pakistan’s interest in facilitating travel for businesspeople and tourists seeking leisure and investment opportunities in the Maldives.
Both leaders identified improved air and maritime connectivity as important steps towards expanding bilateral trade, tourism and economic cooperation.
The announcement comes as the Maldives and Pakistan mark 60 years of diplomatic relations, established on 26 July 1966.
