The Maldives has reached a major tourism milestone for 2026, welcoming its one millionth visitor of the year through Velana International Airport (VIA) on Friday.
The landmark arrival was celebrated during a special ceremony organized by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), bringing together government officials, tourism stakeholders and aviation partners to mark the occasion.
The one millionth tourist, a visitor from Spain, arrived in the Maldives on a Qatar Airways flight from Doha and received a warm welcome upon landing at the country’s main international gateway.
Among those attending the ceremony were Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen, senior officials from the ministry, MACL Chief Commercial Officer Mohamed Mihad, Chief Emergency Service Officer Abdulla Waheed, Controller General of Immigration Ahmed Faseeh, Visit Maldives CEO and Managing Director Ibrahim Shiuree, along with representatives from airlines, resorts and other tourism industry partners.

As part of the celebrations, the milestone visitor was presented with commemorative gifts and tokens of appreciation from MACL and industry stakeholders, reflecting the collaborative effort behind the Maldives’ tourism success.

The achievement comes as the Maldives continues to maintain its position as one of the world’s leading luxury travel destinations, attracting visitors from key markets across Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
Tourism remains the backbone of the Maldivian economy, contributing significantly to employment, foreign currency earnings and government revenue. Industry officials have repeatedly emphasized the importance of sustaining growth while enhancing visitor experiences and expanding tourism infrastructure.

Velana International Airport, which handles the overwhelming majority of international arrivals to the Maldives, continues to play a central role in supporting the country’s tourism sector. Major expansion projects currently underway at the airport are expected to further increase passenger handling capacity and improve services for travelers.
MACL said the one million visitor milestone highlights the continued strength and resilience of the tourism industry despite global economic uncertainties and regional challenges that have affected travel patterns in some markets.
The company also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Visit Maldives, Maldives Immigration, Maldives Customs Service, Aviation Security Command, airline partners, ground handling companies, resorts and other industry stakeholders for their contribution to achieving the milestone.
According to the latest tourism statistics, the Maldives crossed the one million visitor mark earlier than many industry observers had anticipated, underlining the continued global appeal of the destination.
Officials have expressed confidence that tourist arrivals will continue to grow throughout the remainder of the year as the country heads into its traditionally stronger tourism season.
