Fishing remains one of the Maldives’ most important traditional industries, with thousands of fishermen venturing out to sea daily across the country’s vast territorial waters. While most trips conclude safely, maritime incidents involving fishermen, vessels and adverse weather conditions continue to occur from time to time.
Over the years, several search-and-rescue operations have been launched in different parts of the country following reports of missing fishermen and seafarers. Some of those incidents have ended in successful rescues, while others have tragically resulted in loss of life.
Authorities routinely advise fishermen and vessel operators to take necessary safety precautions before heading to sea, including monitoring weather forecasts, ensuring communication equipment is functioning properly and following established maritime safety guidelines.
Police said further information regarding the latest incident will be provided once investigations progress.
