The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has opened applications for its 2026 Research Fund, allocating MVR 5 million to support academic research and book-writing projects across a range of economic and social policy areas.
Applications are being accepted under two categories, Independent Research Grants and Book Writing Grants, with individuals, academic institutions and think tanks eligible to submit proposals.
The central bank said the initiative is intended to encourage high-quality research that can contribute to evidence-based policymaking in the Maldives, while generating new research and ideas that support the country’s economic and financial stability.
Applicants leading research teams are required to hold at least a Master’s degree or an equivalent higher qualification. MMA is also particularly encouraging researchers with PhDs to participate in this year’s programme.
While preference will be given to research connected to MMA’s mandate and areas identified as national priorities, the authority said proposals covering other subjects will also be considered.
Priority areas for the 2026 grants include economic stability, monetary policy and inflation dynamics, alongside financial sector resilience, regulation and innovation. Research into digitalisation, financial technology and financial inclusion is also among the areas MMA is seeking to support.
Other identified fields include tourism and the sustainable economy, Islamic finance and sustainable development, the labour market and education, housing and urban development, spatial economics, healthcare, public expenditure and social protection.
The Research Fund is a relatively new initiative by the central bank, having been launched during MMA’s Research Conference in December 2024.
Its first round of grants was opened the following year. Six research proposals and one book-writing project were selected for funding under the 2025 round.
MMA said applications for the latest round can be submitted through its Research Fund portal until October 13.
