The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that construction work on the outer breakwater at the entrance of the K. Maafushi harbor is currently underway as part of the island’s ongoing harbor expansion project.
According to MTCC, the large-scale harbor development project has now crossed the halfway stage since construction began on May 22, 2023.
The company stated that current works are focused on strengthening and protecting the harbor entrance through the construction of the breakwater structure, which forms a key component of the overall project.
The harbor expansion includes extensive dredging works, with 28,836 cubic meters being dredged from the existing harbor basin and an additional 63,711 cubic meters dredged for the new harbor extension area. The project also involves dredging 4,414 cubic meters at the channel entrance.
In addition to the breakwater, the scope of the project includes the construction of a sand-filled breakwater, 64 meters of revetment, and 700 meters of geo-bag revetment aimed at improving coastal protection and harbor durability.
MTCC is also carrying out the construction of a 374-meter quay wall along with the installation of a 367-meter scouring apron, 73 mooring rings, and 10 mooring buoys to improve harbor operations and vessel access.
Additional infrastructure planned under the project includes an access platform, a concrete bridge, a concrete jetty, street lighting, and the development of a paved area measuring nearly 1,900 square meters.
The Maafushi harbor development project carries a total cost of MVR 82 million and is scheduled for completion within 600 days.
