Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has reported progress on the construction of 75 housing units in Dhiggaru, Meemu Atoll, with foundation concrete works currently underway for the second housing unit.
The state-owned company confirmed the latest development in an update on the project, which is being implemented under a design-and-build contract.
The ongoing foundation works mark another stage in the construction process, with the project intended to expand housing opportunities for residents of the island.
Foundation construction is a critical stage of residential development, providing the structural support required for buildings before work can proceed on the upper sections.
The development forms part of wider efforts to address housing needs in island communities, where limited land availability and rising construction costs have made access to adequate housing a longstanding concern.
Housing shortages remain a significant challenge across the Maldives, particularly for young families seeking independent accommodation and households living in overcrowded conditions.
The construction of new residential units in islands such as Dhiggaru is intended to provide additional housing capacity within existing communities, potentially reducing the need for residents to relocate elsewhere in search of suitable accommodation.
MTCC has been involved in the implementation of various public infrastructure and development projects across the country, including harbour construction, coastal protection, land reclamation and housing-related works.
The company’s involvement in the Dhiggaru development forms part of its broader role in delivering infrastructure projects across inhabited islands.
