The launch of the Malé Taxi Line service in Vilimalé is drawing closer, with senior officials from the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) carrying out a final inspection of preparations ahead of the service’s expansion to the island.
MTCC Managing Director DCP (Retired) Ahmed Saudi, accompanied by Vilimalé Member of Parliament Mohamed Ismail and other senior company officials, visited key locations in Vilimalé to assess readiness for the introduction of the new transport service.
According to MTCC, the expansion of the taxi line is expected to provide residents with a more reliable and accessible transport option while strengthening the island’s overall public transport network.
The company described the service as an environmentally friendly initiative that will improve daily mobility for residents and visitors alike.
The Malé Taxi Line was introduced as part of broader efforts to modernize transportation within the Greater Malé Region and address longstanding concerns over taxi availability. The project forms part of a wider government initiative aimed at improving urban mobility and reducing transportation challenges faced by residents.
MTCC said the service has already demonstrated strong demand since its initial launch in Malé. Statistics released by the company show that more than 13,000 trips were completed during the first month of operations alone.
To support the service, a fleet of 150 fully electric vehicles was brought into the country. The fleet includes vehicles of varying sizes, ranging from compact cars designed to navigate Malé’s narrow streets to larger vehicles capable of transporting passengers with luggage to and from the airport.
The use of electric vehicles is also aligned with the government’s broader environmental objectives, including efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote cleaner transportation solutions.
Officials believe the introduction of the service in Vilimalé will help ease transportation challenges faced by residents, particularly during peak travel hours and periods of high demand.
MTCC stated that public feedback will continue to play an important role in shaping the future of the service. The company noted that it aims to further refine operations based on user experiences and expand features where necessary.
The expansion into Vilimalé marks another step in the government’s efforts to develop a more integrated and modern transport system across the Greater Malé Region, which includes Malé, Hulhumalé, Vilimalé and Velana International Airport.
With final inspections now underway, residents are expected to gain access to the service in the near future, bringing another transportation option to one of the capital region’s fastest-growing communities.
