The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has reported further progress on the construction of the mosque in Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo, with work currently underway to prepare the building’s concrete slab.
According to MTCC, workers are carrying out formwork for the slab, marking another milestone in the project to complete the mosque after construction had previously stalled.
The project was handed over to MTCC in April 2025, with the state-owned contractor tasked with completing all unfinished works left incomplete under the previous construction phase.
Once completed, the mosque will be built on a 7,933-square-metre site and will have the capacity to accommodate 500 worshippers.
The project was awarded to MTCC for MVR 9.44 million and is scheduled for completion within 360 days.
The agreement transferring the project to MTCC was signed at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, with MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudi signing on behalf of the company and Deputy Minister of Islamic Affairs Ibrahim Asim representing the ministry.
The government has been working to resume and complete several stalled public infrastructure projects across the country, including mosques, schools and community facilities that had remained unfinished for extended periods.
Hanimaadhoo, one of the largest islands in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, is home to more than 2,600 residents and serves as an important transport hub in the northern Maldives due to the presence of Hanimaadhoo International Airport. The island is also expected to play a larger role in regional development as work continues on the expansion of the airport and related infrastructure projects.
Authorities have said completing the mosque will improve access to religious facilities for residents while meeting the needs of the island’s growing population.
