Muhthalib: Government Will Serve All Islands Regardless of Election Results

By Hussain Shinan Published 11 hours ago

The government does not deliver services based on how citizens vote, Housing and Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdulla Muhthalib said, assuring that development projects will continue across all islands regardless of recent election outcomes.

Speaking in response to questions raised in the People’s Majlis, the Minister addressed concerns from lawmakers about whether projects would proceed in areas where opposition candidates secured control in the Local Council Elections held earlier this month.

Muhthalib stressed that the government’s priority remains meeting the needs of the public, adding that electoral results do not influence the delivery of services or implementation of projects.

He also dismissed circulating claims that work on the Gaadhiffushi land reclamation project had been halted following the election of opposition-backed council members. According to the Minister, the project is actively progressing.

“The government’s philosophy is not to provide services based on the votes people cast. If a commitment has been made, we will carry it out,” he said.

While reaffirming this stance, the Minister noted that some projects may face delays due to challenges in coordination with local councils. He pointed to the redevelopment of outer roads in Malé as an example, stating that progress had been affected by a lack of cooperation from the city council. He also referenced delays in the development of a new market project for similar reasons.

Muhthalib urged local councils to work collaboratively with the government, emphasizing that cooperation is essential to ensure timely delivery of projects and services to citizens across the country.
