Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has assumed responsibility for water and sewerage services in Addu City and Fuvahmulah City as part of the government’s ongoing restructuring of state-owned utility operations.
The transfer, implemented following a decision by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, covers Addu City, including Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo, as well as Fuvahmulah City.
MWSC announced that its first billing cycle in the newly transferred service areas will begin on Thursday, October 22, 2026, with employees scheduled to visit residential and commercial properties to record water meter readings.
The company said its personnel would be wearing official uniforms during these visits and requested customers to ensure that meters are easily accessible.
Residents and businesses have also been urged to cooperate with meter-reading teams to help ensure that the initial billing process is completed smoothly.
MWSC assured customers that the change in service provider would not disrupt water and sewerage services, stressing that supplies and operations would continue throughout the transition.
The company has also encouraged customers to register through its official mobile application, which provides access to its digital services and account management facilities.
To assist customers during the handover, temporary MWSC service counters have been established at the company’s Addu City branch on Hiriya Magu and at a location on Naib Thuthtu Hingun, Miskit Magu, in Feydhoo.
Customers have been advised to settle their bills within the designated payment periods.
The transfer comes amid a broader government initiative to reorganise utility services previously managed by Fenaka Corporation, with water and sewerage operations being brought under MWSC and electricity services transferred to State Electric Company Limited (STELCO).
STELCO recently began electricity operations in Fuvahmulah City, reflecting the government’s move towards assigning different utility services to specialised state-owned companies.
MWSC, which has extensive experience managing water supply and wastewater infrastructure in the Greater Malé Region, is now expanding its operational responsibilities to additional population centres in the southern Maldives.
The changes are intended to strengthen the management of essential services and improve operational coordination, although the transition will require the integration of existing infrastructure, customer records and billing arrangements into MWSC’s systems.
For households and businesses in Addu and Fuvahmulah, the immediate priority will be ensuring a smooth transition to the company’s customer service and billing procedures while maintaining uninterrupted access to water and sewerage facilities.
MWSC said customers requiring assistance or clarification can contact its customer care hotline on 1575 or email [email protected].
