Nazim resigns as deputy speaker minutes before no-confidence vote

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 3 hours ago

Ahmed Nazim, the Member of Parliament for Dhiggaru constituency, has resigned from his post as Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis shortly before the start of today’s parliamentary sitting.

His resignation came just moments before lawmakers were scheduled to debate and vote on a motion seeking his removal from the position. The motion had been submitted by the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), which currently holds a super-majority in parliament.

Nazim’s decision effectively precedes the no-confidence proceedings that had been placed on the Majlis agenda for today’s session.

Following his resignation, Nazim firmly rejected the allegations made against him, maintaining that the claims were unfounded. He did not provide further details regarding the accusations during his remarks.

The vacancy created by Nazim’s resignation is expected to trigger the process for the election of a new Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis in accordance with parliamentary procedures.

The development marks the latest shift within the parliamentary leadership as the ruling PNC continues to consolidate its influence in the legislature, where it commands a dominant majority.
