Construction work is advancing on key accommodation facilities being developed as part of the Maldives National University (MNU) campus project in GDh. Thinadhoo, with the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) reporting progress on structural works at the site.
According to MTCC, reinforcement steel installation and formwork preparation for first-floor beams and slabs are currently underway at the student accommodation block being built under the project.
The development forms part of a broader initiative to expand higher education opportunities in the atolls and strengthen educational infrastructure outside the capital region.
The Thinadhoo campus project consists of several major components, including a three-storey academic building that will serve as the main campus facility. In addition, dedicated accommodation blocks are being developed for both students and staff.
Plans for the student residence include a two-storey building equipped with 31 rooms and a laundry facility, aimed at providing accommodation for students pursuing higher education in the region.
A separate two-storey accommodation block is also being constructed for staff. The facility will include seven rooms as well as a café designed to serve employees working at the campus.
MNU has previously stated that the project is intended to support both students and staff by creating a more accessible and conducive learning environment in the southern region.
The development is among several public infrastructure projects that have been accelerated under government efforts to address delays affecting essential services across the country. Authorities have handed a number of previously stalled or pending projects to MTCC in recent years to expedite implementation and delivery.
Thinadhoo, one of the largest population centres in the Maldives outside the Greater Malé Region, is home to more than 10,000 residents and serves as an important administrative and economic hub in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.
Education sector stakeholders have long highlighted the need to expand access to tertiary education in the outer atolls, reducing the need for students to relocate to Malé to pursue higher studies.
MTCC said the completed campus is expected to provide significant educational and social benefits to the people of Thinadhoo and neighbouring islands by improving access to university-level programmes and creating new opportunities for local students.
The company noted that construction works continue to progress as efforts move forward to establish the campus as a major higher education centre in the south of the country.
