President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Thursday night strongly pushed back against what he described as a sustained campaign of accusations, misinformation and character assassination by the opposition, accusing rival political figures of attempting to discredit him through personal attacks instead of policy criticism.
Speaking at the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) headquarters, President Muizzu said opposition parties had failed to challenge his administration’s achievements on the economy, housing, foreign policy and governance, forcing them to resort to “slander” and fabricated narratives.
“Since they have no valid criticism of our work, they have resorted to personal attacks and character assassination,” Muizzu said.
The President stated that despite what he described as ongoing attempts to defame him through online campaigns and “documentaries,” he remained calm because he trusted himself and relied on faith and prayer.
Muizzu also directly addressed recent rumors circulating about his family, dismissing claims regarding his marriage after First Lady Sajidha Mohamed travelled to the United Kingdom to visit their daughter.
“They even tried to create a narrative that my wife and I have separated because she traveled to the UK to visit our daughter,” he said. “They try to turn our lives into a soap opera.”
The President said the Maldives needs a “responsible opposition” capable of constructive criticism rather than engaging in what he called petty political tactics driven by self-interest.
During the speech, Muizzu additionally defended his administration’s broader record, highlighting what he described as major achievements over the past two and a half years, including maintaining political stability, settling nearly USD 974 million in debt within 40 days, expanding housing projects nationwide and implementing a “Maldives First” foreign policy.
He also accused previous administrations of political vengeance, claiming earlier governments routinely imprisoned political leaders and former presidents when they became politically active.
Muizzu further reiterated his government’s commitment to protecting Islam, combating corruption, addressing undocumented migration and intensifying efforts against drugs and gang-related crime.
Concluding his remarks, the President thanked PNC supporters and pledged that his administration would continue prioritizing national interests while governing within the framework of Islam and the Constitution.
