The People’s National Congress (PNC) has announced plans to intensify party activities nationwide ahead of its congress scheduled for October, with efforts underway to strengthen grassroots engagement and expand the party’s presence across the Maldives.
Speaking at a press conference held at the party headquarters on Tuesday, PNC Vice President and Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam said preparations for the upcoming congress are progressing rapidly.
Shiyam described the congress as one of the most important events in the life of a political party, noting that major decisions shaping the party’s future direction and policies are finalized during the gathering.
He emphasized that the congress plays a particularly important role for ordinary party members, describing it as the primary avenue through which grassroots supporters can influence internal reforms and strengthen the party’s administration.
“The changes that general members wish to see within the party are brought through elections held during an open congress,” Shiyam said, adding that President Mohamed Muizzu closely listens to the concerns and views of ordinary members.
Meanwhile, PNC Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Falah said the party plans to establish steering committees and hold elections for constituency presidents ahead of the congress. According to Falah, these internal elections are expected to be completed within the next two months.
Falah also revealed that the party intends to establish campaign hubs, locally referred to as “Jagaha,” on every inhabited island in the Maldives before the congress takes place.
While some islands already have functioning party offices and hubs, he noted that resources are currently being provided to strengthen existing operations while work continues to expand into islands where the party has yet to establish a permanent presence.
The October congress is expected to be a major organizational milestone for the ruling party as it seeks to further consolidate its structure and grassroots network nationwide.
