Police close roads as MDP protest set to disrupt Malé traffic

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 4 hours ago

The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has announced that several areas of Malé City will be cordoned off tonight from 8:00 PM until 12:00 AM, citing traffic management and public safety requirements.

In a statement released this afternoon, police said the temporary restrictions are part of efforts to regulate traffic and maintain order in the capital. Authorities have yet to specify which roads will be affected.

The closures come as the opposition prepares to hold another street protest under the banner “Vazeefaa Buraasfathi” (Employment Thursday). The demonstration is scheduled to begin at 8:30 PM from Rasfannu and proceed to Artificial Beach.

The opposition gathering is expected to cause disruptions to traffic and public movement in parts of the city, prompting police to implement precautionary measures to minimize inconvenience to residents and road users.

Despite repeatedly taking to the streets with demonstrations and political campaigns, the MDP has continued to face criticism for relying on protests rather than presenting alternative policy solutions to the public. Tonight’s event marks another attempt by the opposition to mobilize supporters through public rallies in the capital.

Police have advised motorists and the public to cooperate with officers on duty and make necessary travel arrangements during the period of the restrictions. Authorities are expected to provide further information should additional traffic control measures be required.
