The State Electric Company (STELCO) has assured customers that teams are working around the clock to fully restore electricity services following a technical issue encountered after a major planned upgrade at the Hulhumalé 50MW power plant early Saturday morning.
According to STELCO, the upgrade was carried out between 3:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. as part of a broader effort to strengthen the reliability and stability of the national power network and support growing electricity demand in the Greater Malé region.
The company said a technical fault emerged after the upgrade was completed, resulting in the temporary shutdown of several generating units and causing power interruptions in parts of Malé and Hulhumalé.
Despite the unexpected setback, STELCO engineers and technical teams were immediately deployed to restore affected systems and normalize operations. The utility said restoration work began as soon as the issue was identified, with specialists continuing efforts to bring the grid back to full capacity.
STELCO emphasized that the overnight upgrade was a proactive investment aimed at enhancing long-term service reliability, improving system performance and ensuring a more resilient electricity network for households and businesses.
The company noted that such infrastructure improvements are essential as electricity consumption continues to rise across the Greater Malé area, particularly with the rapid development of Hulhumalé and surrounding communities.
While acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the temporary interruptions, STELCO reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a stable and dependable power supply and thanked customers for their patience and understanding as restoration efforts continue.
The utility is expected to provide further updates as work progresses and the upgraded system is fully brought back online.
