President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has underscored the importance of voluntary blood donation, describing it as a critical pillar of public health and a life-saving act that benefits thousands of people in need of medical care.
In a message shared on social media to mark World Blood Donor Day, observed annually on June 14, the President paid tribute to blood donors across the Maldives and around the world, acknowledging their invaluable contribution to society.
He noted that voluntary donors play a vital role in ensuring patients receive timely treatment, particularly those requiring regular blood transfusions as well as individuals facing medical emergencies.
According to the President, blood remains one of the few medical resources that cannot be artificially manufactured despite significant advances in modern medicine and healthcare technology.
“Blood continues to be an irreplaceable resource. Voluntary blood donation is essential to maintaining public health security and strengthening emergency preparedness,” he stated.
President Muizzu emphasized that maintaining a reliable blood supply is particularly important in a geographically dispersed island nation such as the Maldives, where access to blood products can be crucial during emergencies and urgent medical situations.

He said the government is continuing efforts to increase awareness about blood donation, encourage more citizens to become regular voluntary donors and strengthen cooperation among institutions and communities to support the country’s healthcare system.
The President’s remarks come as health authorities continue to stress the need for a stable and sustainable blood donor network to meet growing demand across the Maldives. Blood donations are regularly required for accident victims, surgical procedures, childbirth complications, cancer patients and individuals living with blood disorders such as thalassemia.
Maldivian Blood Services (MBS), together with government institutions, private organizations and community groups, frequently conducts blood donation drives throughout the year to replenish national blood stocks and encourage public participation.
World Blood Donor Day is observed globally every year on June 14 to raise awareness about the need for safe blood and blood products while recognizing the contribution of voluntary unpaid blood donors. The annual observance also serves as a platform to encourage more people to donate blood regularly and help save lives.
Health experts note that a single blood donation can potentially save multiple lives, making voluntary donors an essential part of every country’s healthcare system.
As the Maldives marks this year’s World Blood Donor Day, the President reiterated the importance of fostering a culture of voluntary donation to ensure that blood is available whenever and wherever it is needed.
