President Muizzu announces legislative overhaul to safeguard Islamic principles

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 28 minutes ago

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to introduce a strengthened legal framework aimed at ensuring that no law contrary to the tenets of Islam can be enacted in the Maldives.

Addressing the official National Day ceremony in Ha. Utheemu, President Muizzu said the proposal would be submitted to the People’s Majlis during its third session this year, describing the initiative as a permanent and systematic safeguard for the country’s Islamic foundations.

The President noted that the Constitution already prohibits the enactment of laws contrary to Islam. However, he said a more robust framework was necessary to ensure that legislation, regulations and procedures consistently remain within those constitutional boundaries.

“Therefore, I intend to bring a permanent solution to this matter. I am committed to ensuring a robust system, both fundamentally and structurally, that prevents the creation of any law in the Maldives that conflicts with the holy religion of Islam,” President Muizzu said.

He assured the public that the proposed system would, God willing, be presented to Parliament during its third session this year.

Reflecting on the significance of National Day, President Muizzu described Islam as inseparable from Maldivian national identity, sovereignty and independence. He said the country’s history demonstrated the importance of remaining steadfast in the Islamic faith.

The President referred to the Portuguese occupation of the Maldives and the subsequent resistance led by national hero Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam, characterising the liberation struggle as one fought in defence of the Islamic faith and the nation’s independence.

He said Maldivian history showed that distancing national policies from Islamic principles had brought serious consequences for the country’s sovereignty.

“Abandoning the faith was not just a betrayal of religion; it was a betrayal of the Maldivian nation, the Maldivian state, and its independence, sovereignty and integrity,” he said.

President Muizzu also stressed the importance of morality in building a strong and meaningful society. He said social values, respect for laws and regulations, and consideration for the wider community were essential components of a civilised nation.

Concluding his address, the President called on Maldivians to use National Day as an opportunity to renew national unity and strengthen a society in which citizens respect, value and care for one another.
