President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has taken firm and lawful action to protect the nation from corruption threatening public trust and national security. Following serious recommendations from the People’s Majlis, the President has dismissed two Deputy Commissioners of Customs linked to the illegal importation of cigarette cartons into the Maldives.
The decisive move comes after the National Security Services Committee, known as the 241 Committee, uncovered that cigarette cartons were smuggled into the country using a private cargo vessel and that additional cartons were removed illegally from a bonded warehouse without the knowledge of the Maldives Customs Service. These findings raised serious concerns about internal misconduct within the institution responsible for guarding the country’s borders.
To ensure full accountability, President Muizzu has ordered the Maldives Customs Service to investigate three additional staff members implicated in the scandal. The investigation must follow established procedures and result in appropriate legal and regulatory measures after completion.
By acting swiftly and without hesitation, President Muizzu has reinforced his Administration’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding national security and eradicating corruption from state institutions. The government continues to demonstrate that protecting the interests of the Maldivian people remains its highest priority.
