The physical commencement of the project was officially inaugurated by the Minister of Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, in the presence of cabinet ministers, members of the People’s Majlis, and senior government officials. The ceremony was also attended by members of the Dhuvaafaru Council and representatives from various state institutions.
MTCC Managing Director, Retired Deputy Commissioner of Police Ahmed Saudee, along with senior officials from the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company, also attended the ceremony, reflecting MTCC’s central role in delivering the project.
The harbour development project involves extensive marine and structural works, including the dredging of 62,264 cubic metres of lagoon and channel areas. Construction plans include a 343 metre outer quay wall, a 285 metre inner quay wall, a 180 metre revetment, a bridge measuring 25 metres in length and 6 metres in width, and a jetty that is 154 metres long and 1.5 metres wide. The project is valued at MVR 142.11 million and has been entrusted to MTCC for completion within 450 days.
Dhuvaafaru, home to a population of 5,047, is widely recognised as a fishing island, with a significant number of residents also working in nearby resorts. Upon completion, the upgraded harbour is expected to provide a spacious and well structured facility with ample mooring space, improving safety and efficiency for fishing and transport vessels.
MTCC, established in 1980, has played a pivotal role in the Maldives’ infrastructure development over the past 44 years, delivering harbours, transport networks, and key social infrastructure projects across the country. The Dhuvaafaru harbour project adds to this legacy of supporting sustainable national development through reliable and modern infrastructure.
