President Muizzu Says PNC Congress Will Be Unlike Any Held Before

By Hussain Shinan Published 1 hour ago

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said the People’s National Congress (PNC) aims to hold what he described as the most democratic and comprehensive party congress ever conducted in the Maldives, expressing confidence that the gathering will set a new standard for internal party governance.

The President made the remarks while addressing a PNC campaign gathering in AA. Ukulhas, where he called on party members to actively prepare for the party’s Congress, scheduled to be held from September 15 to 18.

According to President Muizzu, the Congress will bring together representatives from across the country and reflect the party’s commitment to strengthening internal democracy and member participation.

“The upcoming Congress will be exemplary and truly complete. When I say complete, I mean that our conduct, our relationships and the way we carry out the proceedings will make it a beautiful and ethically sound Congress,” he said.

President Muizzu stressed that all decisions during the Congress would be taken through democratic processes, adding that the event is intended to demonstrate how political parties should conduct their internal affairs.

He said the party wants the Congress to serve as a positive example for the wider political landscape in the Maldives.

“Our Congress, which will be held in the middle of next month, will become the most democratically complete and successful meeting held in the Maldives so far,” the President said.

The upcoming Congress follows the conclusion of the PNC’s internal elections in July, during which members elected representatives to the party’s various organisational bodies. The September gathering is expected to finalise the party’s organisational structure and elect senior office-bearers, including the party’s president and vice presidents.

The PNC has experienced rapid growth since President Muizzu assumed office in November 2023. According to the latest figures from the Elections Commission, the ruling party has 67,579 registered members, making it the largest political party in the Maldives.

Party leaders have repeatedly described the September Congress as a key milestone in the PNC’s organisational development, with the event expected to shape the party’s future direction ahead of upcoming national elections.
