President Muizzu sends message of condolence as Thailand battles severe floods

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended condolences to Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul following severe flooding that has claimed lives, displaced residents and affected hundreds of thousands of people across Thailand.
In a message sent to the Thai leader, President Muizzu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and widespread destruction caused by days of heavy rainfall.
On behalf of the Maldivian government and people, the President conveyed his sympathies to Prime Minister Anutin, the Thai government and people, particularly families who lost loved ones to drowning and electrical hazards during the floods.
Muizzu also wished those injured in the disaster a swift recovery and expressed hope that emergency response operations would continue without interruption, allowing assistance to reach affected communities as quickly as possible.
The message comes as Thailand continues to deal with widespread flooding triggered by exceptionally heavy monsoon rainfall, with Bangkok among the areas experiencing significant disruption.
Around 700,000 people from approximately 329,000 families have been affected, according to figures from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
Several areas of the capital have been particularly hard hit. Between 30,000 and 40,000 people have been affected in Lat Krabang, while around 20,000 people have been impacted in Bang Kapi, including the Khlong Chan area.
A further 30,000 to 40,000 people have been affected in Khan Na Yao, while approximately 10,000 residents have been impacted across areas including Lak Si, Saphan Sung and Suan Luang, particularly communities located near canals and waterways.
The scale of the flooding prompted authorities to declare all 50 districts of Bangkok disaster zones, allowing emergency measures and relief operations to be expanded across the capital.
Days of intense rainfall have overwhelmed drainage systems and canals, causing water to inundate roads, residential neighbourhoods and businesses in low-lying areas.
Emergency response teams have been deployed to affected communities, while authorities continue evacuation and relief operations for residents unable to remain safely in their homes.
Pumping operations are also underway in Bangkok as authorities work to lower water levels in canals and restore drainage capacity in flooded neighbourhoods.
The Maldives and Thailand maintain longstanding diplomatic and people-to-people ties. Thailand is also a major destination for Maldivians travelling abroad, particularly for healthcare, education, tourism and other purposes.
President Muizzu’s message expressed solidarity with Thailand as authorities continue efforts to assist affected communities and recover from the widespread damage caused by the floods.
