President Muizzu Sets October Congress as Turning Point for PNC’s Future

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 3 hours ago

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has signaled a major turning point for the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), announcing that the party’s upcoming national congress will be a defining moment to strengthen internal democracy and prepare for future electoral battles

Speaking at a victory gathering in AA. Rasdhoo following sweeping council election wins in Rasdhoo, Ukulhas, and Thoddoo, traditionally opposition strongholds, President Muizzu framed the congress as a necessary step to consolidate political gains while addressing recent setbacks, including the failed referendum on synchronizing elections.

The President emphasized that preparations for the congress, scheduled for October, are already underway, urging party members nationwide to begin electing island-level steering committees and leadership structures. He described the planned congress as one that aims to set a new benchmark for transparency and fairness in Maldivian political party processes.

President Muizzu’s remarks come at a moment of mixed political outcomes for the ruling party. While the PNC secured a strong majority across councils and Women’s Development Committees nationwide, it faced resistance in key urban centers and suffered a notable defeat in the referendum vote. The President acknowledged the setback, attributing it to shortcomings in communicating the proposal’s benefits to the public.

Despite this, President Muizzu maintained that the broader electoral outcome reflects public confidence in the government’s national and religious vision. He underscored that future success depends on stronger internal organization, clearer messaging, and unified grassroots engagement.

The upcoming congress is expected to play a central role in reshaping the party’s strategy ahead of future presidential and parliamentary elections. President Muizzu stressed that internal reforms are essential to sustaining momentum, noting that a stronger party structure would translate into more effective governance.

In his address, the President also reinforced expectations for newly elected officials, calling for integrity, inclusiveness, and close cooperation with the central government. He reiterated that councils must serve all citizens equally, regardless of political affiliation, and warned against conduct that undermines public trust.

Positioning the congress as both a reform platform and a political reset, President Muizzu signaled that the PNC intends to transform recent electoral gains into long-term dominance through institutional strengthening and disciplined leadership.

With island-level political shifts already underway, particularly in areas long held by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the congress is likely to shape the next phase of Maldivian politics, determining how effectively the ruling party can convert momentum into sustained national influence.
