In a grand display of regional solidarity and historic partnership, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Monday formally welcomed Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka to the Maldives with full state honours at Republic Square, marking the beginning of President Disanayaka’s maiden state visit since assuming office in September 2024.
The ceremonial welcome began with President Muizzu receiving his Sri Lankan counterpart at the iconic square, followed by a vibrant cultural performance by local students showcasing the rich traditions of the Maldives. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) honoured the visiting Head of State with a 21-gun salute, while the national anthems of both nations echoed through the Republican square area.
President Disanayaka then proceeded to inspect the Guard of Honour before meeting senior dignitaries from both the Maldivian and Sri Lankan delegations.
This visit comes at a historic juncture as the Maldives and Sri Lanka celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations — a bond established on 26 July 1965, the very day the Maldives attained independence. The visit not only reaffirms the close friendship between the two neighbours but also underscores the Muizzu administration’s continued commitment to strengthening regional ties, fostering mutual development, and promoting peace in South Asia.
President Disanayaka’s visit is expected to pave the way for deeper cooperation in key areas such as trade, education, health, and tourism, as both nations look toward a future of shared growth and prosperity.
