In a decisive move to address the housing needs of Maldivians, the Ministry of Housing has announced that individuals who applied for the previous administration’s 4,000 flats scheme but were not selected will automatically be considered for upcoming housing projects. This initiative aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to provide housing for every citizen in need within his current term.
Approximately 20,000 applications were submitted during the launch of the Gedhoruveriya Scheme. The ministry recently reviewed the list of 4,000 flat recipients announced by the previous government and, on February 28, published a list of qualified applicants.
Addressing concerns about the selection process, the ministry clarified that the review adhered strictly to the originally established criteria. Applicants scoring 75 points for three-bedroom flats and 73 points for two-bedroom flats were verified. Importantly, those who did not secure flats in the initial allocation are not required to reapply; their applications remain active for future housing opportunities.
This assurance reflects President Muizzu’s pledge that every Maldivian in need will have access to housing during his administration. The ministry also emphasized that the current verification of selected applicants was conducted under the guidance of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), ensuring transparency and integrity in the process.
The window for submitting complaints regarding the recent list is open until March 31. Within the first three days, approximately 700 complaints were received, indicating active public engagement in the process.
Of the 4,000 flats under the Gedhoruveriya Scheme in Hulhumalé, the revised list identifies 1,820 eligible recipients. Specifically, 1,423 applicants qualified for three-bedroom flats, and 397 for two-bedroom units. Conversely, 2,695 applications did not meet the criteria, and 424 individuals were removed from the recipient list due to changes in their points.
The ministry reiterated that evaluations were based on information provided by applicants, following guidelines set by the Gedhoruveriya Committee. Notably, applicants who have resided in Malé for 15 years were not disqualified, addressing allegations of disproportionate disqualifications among Malé residents.
President Muizzu has firmly assured that by the end of his five-year term, all housing issues in the Malé area will be resolved. The comprehensive plan includes developing land by integrating Rasmalé, Hulhumalé, Gulhifalhu, and Giraavaru, coupled with special housing loans and other opportunities to ensure every citizen’s housing needs are met.
This proactive approach underscores the administration’s dedication to fulfilling its housing promises and enhancing the quality of life for all Maldivians.
