Former Member of Parliament Mohamed Sinan has announced that he will not contest the upcoming by-election for the Hithadhoo North constituency in Addu City, despite previously securing the party ticket.
Sinan had won the People’s National Congress (PNC) primary for the seat, but said he has now opted to step aside to make way for a new candidate.
Decision After Consultations
In a statement shared on social media, Sinan said his decision followed discussions with constituents over the past few days. He noted that these engagements led him to conclude that the party’s chances of securing the seat would be strengthened by fielding a different candidate.
“I have decided not to contest the by-election scheduled for June. However, I will remain fully involved and take a leading role in supporting whichever candidate the party nominates,” he said.
He also expressed appreciation to the party leadership for their support following his primary victory, describing the internal election process as fair and well conducted.
Party Yet to Announce Next Candidate
Sinan confirmed that he has formally informed the PNC leadership of his decision, which has been accepted. The party has not yet indicated who will replace him as its candidate for the by-election.
During the primary, Sinan had faced Ahmed Saeed, who currently serves as councillor for the Hithadhoo Moolekede constituency.
Seat Vacated Following Court Ruling
The Hithadhoo North seat became vacant after a ruling by the Supreme Court of Maldives, which determined that Sinan was ineligible to remain in office due to an outstanding debt and failure to comply with a court-ordered payment.
Under the Constitution, such circumstances result in disqualification from holding a parliamentary seat.
The by-election is scheduled to be held in June.
