State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has paid tribute to its former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, the late Mohamed Rasheed, after he was posthumously honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the development of engineering and the energy sector in the Maldives.
Rasheed was among three individuals presented with Lifetime Achievement Awards at the newly introduced Maldives Engineers Awards, held as part of this year’s National Engineers Day celebrations.
STELCO described the recognition as a proud moment for the company, noting that Rasheed dedicated nearly half a century of his life to the development of the country’s energy sector.
During his long association with STELCO, Rasheed served in senior leadership positions including as Chairman and CEO, contributing to the company’s growth and the wider modernisation of electricity services in the Maldives.
STELCO particularly highlighted his role in anticipating the country’s future electricity requirements and developing the Power Development Plan, which was formulated to help prepare the sector for growing demand.
The company also credited Rasheed’s leadership at board level, where he contributed to setting long-term strategies and guiding STELCO’s future direction.
His career coincided with a period of major transformation in the Maldivian electricity sector as demand increased alongside population growth, urban development and economic expansion. Over the decades, electricity infrastructure evolved from comparatively limited generation capacity into increasingly complex generation and distribution networks serving rapidly developing communities.
STELCO said Rasheed played an irreplaceable role in that transformation, describing him as an exemplary figure whose work contributed not only to the development of the company but also to the modernisation of the country’s energy and electricity sector.
The recognition comes as STELCO continues to expand and strengthen its electricity infrastructure to meet rising demand. The state-owned utility operates critical generation and distribution infrastructure and has continued investing in additional generation capacity and improvements aimed at maintaining reliable electricity services.
STELCO has also placed increasing emphasis on developing Maldivian technical expertise. The company recently highlighted that its engineering workforce is entirely Maldivian, while continuing to provide training and professional development opportunities for engineers and other technical employees.
The inaugural Engineers Awards form part of a broader effort to recognise the contribution of engineers to national development. The first awards ceremony was held on September 10 as part of National Engineers Day activities, recognising individuals, organisations and engineering initiatives across the country.
STELCO extended its congratulations and best wishes to Rasheed’s family following the posthumous honour.
On behalf of its management and employees, the company also expressed its gratitude for Rasheed’s decades of service to STELCO, the electricity industry and the Maldives.
