State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has commissioned a new one-megawatt generator in HA. Hoarafushi, increasing the island’s total installed electricity generation capacity to 3.3 megawatts as part of efforts to strengthen power supply reliability.
The state-owned utility announced that the newly installed generator has successfully completed commissioning and has officially been brought into operation, expanding the capacity of the island’s power generation system.
According to STELCO, the additional generating capacity is expected to improve the quality and reliability of electricity services provided to households, businesses and public facilities across Hoarafushi.
The latest addition represents an increase of approximately 43 percent over the island’s previous installed capacity of 2.3 megawatts, providing greater flexibility to meet electricity demand.
The company said the upgraded capacity would contribute to the island’s continued development while providing greater convenience to residents through improved electricity services.
Reliable electricity supply is particularly important for island communities, where power generation systems must support essential services, commercial activities and household needs.
Unlike larger interconnected electricity networks, many inhabited islands in the Maldives depend on their own power generation facilities to meet local demand.
This makes adequate generating capacity and properly maintained equipment essential to maintaining consistent electricity services, particularly during periods of increased consumption or when existing generators require maintenance.
The addition of a new generator can also provide greater operational flexibility by allowing electricity providers to distribute demand across available generating units.
In Hoarafushi, the increase to 3.3 megawatts is expected to strengthen the island’s ability to accommodate electricity requirements as residential and commercial activities develop.
The northern island is an important community in Haa Alifu Atoll, with electricity supporting households, government institutions, businesses and essential infrastructure.
Hoarafushi also serves as an important transport location in the northern Maldives, with its domestic airport providing air connectivity for residents and travellers in the surrounding region.
Continued improvements to electricity infrastructure are important for supporting such facilities and accommodating future development.
Across the Maldives, electricity demand is influenced by factors including population growth, commercial development and the increasing use of electrical appliances and cooling systems.
For island power systems, improvements in generation capacity can help utilities manage demand more effectively while reducing pressure on existing equipment.
However, installed generation capacity represents the combined rated output of available generating equipment and does not necessarily indicate the amount of electricity being produced at any given time.
STELCO has not disclosed the cost of the new generator or provided further technical details about the installation.
The commissioning forms part of ongoing efforts by electricity service providers to strengthen power infrastructure and maintain reliable services across inhabited islands.
STELCO said the additional generating capacity would help improve electricity services in Hoarafushi while supporting the island’s development and the daily needs of its residents.
