The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has deployed a new 500-kilowatt generator to K. Himmafushi, increasing the island’s total electricity generation capacity to 2,414 kilowatts. This latest development forms part of STELCO’s nationwide initiative to upgrade and reinforce the Maldives’ energy infrastructure.
The new generator is now fully operational, marking a significant improvement in power reliability for the residents and businesses of Himmafushi. With the island’s growing population and tourism-related activities, the increased capacity comes at a crucial time to meet rising energy demands and support local economic growth.
STELCO’s investment in Himmafushi mirrors similar efforts on other islands across the country. Just recently, the utility provider installed a 500-kilowatt unit in Dhigurah, 500-kilowatt unit in Kaashidhoo and a 600-kilowatt generator in Thoddoo, contributing to the expansion of the national power grid.
In addition to conventional generator upgrades, STELCO has been proactively exploring renewable energy solutions. Solar power systems and battery storage projects have already been introduced in several islands, underscoring the company’s commitment to reducing dependency on fossil fuels and embracing sustainable alternatives.
These efforts are in line with the Maldivian government’s national energy roadmap, which sets an ambitious target of achieving 33% renewable energy in electricity consumption by 2028. STELCO’s ongoing initiatives, including the deployment of energy-efficient infrastructure and renewable energy integration, are central to realizing this vision.
As energy needs continue to grow across the archipelago, STELCO’s actions in Himmafushi and beyond reflect a broader commitment to building a resilient and sustainable energy future for the Maldives.
