State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has officially commenced electricity service operations in Fuvahmulah City, marking the transfer of the island’s power services from Fenaka Corporation as part of the government’s ongoing restructuring of utility services.
The commencement of operations was marked by a special flag-hoisting ceremony held in Fuvahmulah on Monday, October 19, attended by senior STELCO officials.
During the ceremony, STELCO Managing Director Dr Ali Azwar raised the Maldivian national flag, while Deputy Managing Director Aishath Muzna hoisted the company’s flag to mark the beginning of its operations in the city.
Speaking following the ceremony, Dr Azwar described the transfer of electricity services from Fenaka to STELCO as an important development for Fuvahmulah and its residents.
He said the transition was being carried out under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to strengthen utility services across the Maldives and improve the standards of essential services provided to communities.
According to Dr Azwar, bringing Fuvahmulah’s electricity operations under STELCO represents an opportunity to improve service delivery and strengthen the management of the city’s power infrastructure.
He also called on employees to work collectively towards bringing electricity services in Fuvahmulah up to the operational standards maintained by STELCO.
The transition forms part of a wider government initiative to reorganise electricity and other utility services previously managed by Fenaka Corporation.
Fenaka has historically been responsible for providing electricity, water and sewerage services across numerous inhabited islands, particularly in areas outside the Greater Malé Region.
STELCO, meanwhile, has traditionally served Malé and surrounding areas, with its operations now being expanded to additional parts of the country.
The government’s restructuring programme involves transferring utility operations from Fenaka to STELCO, with the aim of consolidating service management and improving operational efficiency.
The initiative has gathered pace in recent weeks, with STELCO taking over utility operations in Haa Alif Atoll as part of the same restructuring process.
The transfer of Fuvahmulah’s electricity services represents another stage in this nationwide transition, extending STELCO’s operational responsibilities to one of the Maldives’ major population centres outside the capital region.
Fuvahmulah, a geographically isolated island city in the southern Maldives, depends on reliable electricity generation and distribution to support households, businesses, public institutions and essential services.
Maintaining a stable power supply is particularly important for the city’s economic activities and the daily needs of its residents.
The transition places responsibility for the city’s electricity operations under STELCO, although the company has not announced specific infrastructure upgrades, tariff changes or service expansion plans associated with the takeover.
The government has been pursuing the reorganisation of state-owned utility companies as part of broader efforts to improve service delivery and streamline the management of public enterprises.
The restructuring has also involved changes to Fenaka’s leadership and management arrangements as preparations continue for the transfer of its operations.
Dr Azwar, who serves as STELCO’s Managing Director, has also been appointed to a leadership role at Fenaka during the restructuring process.
With electricity operations now officially launched in Fuvahmulah, STELCO is expected to oversee the city’s power services as the transition from Fenaka progresses.
The company has emphasised the importance of employee cooperation in maintaining service standards and ensuring that the transfer benefits residents through reliable electricity services.
