The State Electric Company (STELCO) has taken a major step towards assuming responsibility for electricity services in Hulhumalé Phase II, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to formally facilitate the transition.
The agreement was signed during a ceremony held on Tuesday, with STELCO Managing Director Dr. Ali Azuwar signing on behalf of the utility company and HDC Managing Director Brigadier (Retired) Ali Zuhair representing the housing corporation.
The MoU marks the beginning of the process to officially transfer the electricity network in Hulhumalé Phase II to STELCO, paving the way for the company to manage and operate power services in one of the country’s fastest-growing residential areas.
Hulhumalé Phase II has witnessed rapid development in recent years, with thousands of housing units completed and more residents moving into the reclaimed suburb. As population density continues to rise, authorities have emphasized the importance of strengthening utility services and emergency response capabilities in the area.
As part of Tuesday’s developments, HDC also handed over space required for the establishment of a dedicated STELCO Emergency Response Center in Hulhumalé Phase II.
According to STELCO, the new facility is expected to enhance the company’s ability to respond swiftly to power-related emergencies and service interruptions, ensuring more efficient support for residents and businesses in the area.
In a further show of collaboration between the two state-owned entities, STELCO also donated light poles to HDC during the ceremony.
The move comes amid ongoing efforts by both institutions to improve infrastructure and public services in Hulhumalé, which has become a key component of the government’s urban expansion strategy.
STELCO is currently the primary electricity provider for the Greater Malé Region and several islands across the country. The company has continued to expand and modernize its services in response to growing demand, particularly in rapidly developing urban areas.
Officials have previously highlighted that improving utility infrastructure remains critical to supporting Hulhumalé’s continued growth and ensuring reliable services for the expanding population.
The signing of the MoU is expected to further strengthen cooperation between STELCO and HDC as both institutions work towards enhancing infrastructure and service delivery in Hulhumalé Phase II.
