State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has conducted a specialised awareness session for its senior management on workplace safety and emergency response, as part of efforts to strengthen occupational health and safety practices across the company.
The session focused on key measures required to protect employees in the workplace and the procedures management should follow when responding to emergencies.
Held in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the programme was conducted by STELCO employees who have received relevant training.
The session was organised in line with requirements under the Maldives’ Occupational Safety and Health Act, which establishes responsibilities for employers and employees in maintaining safe and healthy working environments.
By directing the programme specifically at senior management, STELCO sought to strengthen awareness at the leadership level, where decisions relating to workplace procedures, risk management and emergency preparedness are implemented across company operations.
The training covered measures that can be taken to minimise workplace risks as well as appropriate responses when emergencies occur, helping management better understand their responsibilities in protecting employees.
Workplace safety carries particular importance for STELCO because much of the company’s work involves electricity generation, distribution systems, powerhouses and other technical infrastructure, where employees can be exposed to occupational hazards if appropriate procedures are not followed.
STELCO operates electricity infrastructure across Malé and several islands, with its technical teams responsible for maintaining generation and distribution systems around the clock. The company has also expanded into other utility services, including water and sewerage operations.
The Occupational Safety and Health Act was ratified in January 2024, establishing national standards for employee safety and workplace conditions. The legislation places responsibilities on employers to maintain safe working environments while introducing mechanisms for accountability and compensation in cases involving workplace injuries.
The framework has placed greater emphasis on workplace safety policies, employee training, emergency preparedness and measures aimed at identifying and reducing occupational risks.
NDMA, meanwhile, plays a central role in strengthening disaster preparedness and emergency response capacity across the Maldives, including through training and awareness programmes conducted with institutions and communities.
STELCO’s latest session forms part of efforts to ensure that safety responsibilities are understood not only by employees working directly in technical environments but also by the senior officials responsible for overseeing company operations.
