A large crowd gathered in Malé on Thursday to mark International Workers’ Day, with a march held to recognise the contributions of workers across the country.
The procession began at the Artificial Beach area and moved along Majeedhee Magu before concluding at Rasfannu, drawing participation from a wide cross-section of society.
Broad Participation Across Sectors
The event brought together representatives from government institutions, state-owned enterprises, private sector employers and trade unions, alongside civil service staff. Several cabinet ministers were also seen taking part in the march.
Organisers said the strong turnout reflected growing recognition of the role workers play in national development.
Exhibition Highlights Workers’ Contributions
Activities continued at Rasfannu, where an exhibition was held featuring information booths and service stalls. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about labour-related issues while creating space for dialogue between stakeholders.
Officials noted that the event was designed not only to celebrate workers, but also to promote policies that support fair working conditions and social justice.
Focus on Rights and Recognition
This year’s Labour Day theme, “Respect, Recognition, Rights,” underscores the importance of valuing workers, acknowledging their contributions and safeguarding their rights.
Participants at the event shared their views on the significance of the day, highlighting the need for continued efforts to improve working environments and opportunities.
Growing Observance in the Maldives
Labour Day was first marked in the Maldives in 2006, and has since become an annual occasion to reflect on labour rights and the role of the workforce.
Authorities say initiatives surrounding the day are part of broader efforts to strengthen protections for workers and foster more inclusive employment conditions nationwide.
